Scott Sportster Hybrid Bike Range Review Part 1

 

The Scott Sportster range is extensive, and can appear a little daunting to get your head around at first sight. In Part 1 we examine the less expensive end of the range, the Sportster 60, 55, 50 and 40.

To start with, it’s as well to notice that the lower the model number, the higher the specification and hence the price. So therefore the Sportster 60 is the entry-level model, and the 40 the highest-spec bike in this group.

All four are available in mens and womens versions – each version of a particular model differing in:-

· Frame geometry.

· Handlebar – the womens version having more shape and is a bit longer.

· Saddle – for obvious reasons…

Everything else – components, weight, price etc is identical between the mens and womens versions of each model. The main differences between the models fall into three areas – the front fork, the gear components and the brakes.

All of the Scott Sportster range are built onto the same frame, constructed in 6061 aluminium. The tubing is double-butted for strength, with nicely tapered top and down tubes. The paintwork and graphics are superb and there’s enough clearance to fit mudguards and fittings for pannier racks if you want.

Sportster 60. This is the entry-level bike in the range. It’s the only model to have a steel fork. The geartrain components are all basic Shimano Tourney and Acera.. The triple chainset and 7-speed cassette result in 21 gear options, selected with Shimano EZ-Fire shifters. These are dead easy to use. You just move up and down the gears by clicking the small levers, and the indicator shows you the gear you’ve selected. The V-brakes are Scott’s own design, operated by levers which are integrated with the shifters.

The handlebars are different for the mens and womens models – both alloy but 10mm longer and with more shape on the womens bike. The saddles also differ, but are of the same quality as those fitted to the rest of the range, so again there is no compromise on quality.

The semi-slick tyres are ideal for hybrid riding. At 37mm they are wide enough and have enough grip for off-road riding, but at the same time low rolling resistance for on the road.

The pedals are flat, and together with the chainguard are an acknowledgement that most peoples’ cycling will be done in normal clothes and shoes.

Weighing 12.4 kg it is possible to buy a lighter bike. But the build quality and specifications are excellent – it’s extremely tough. It’s a fantastic value Scott bike.

Sportster 50. This is the next step up. In nearly all aspects this is the same as the 60. There is no change to the frame, handlebars, wheels or tyres. There are two main differences, the first being the Suntour suspension fork which will make any off-road trips much more comfortable. The second is the 8-speed cassette – there’s no change to the derailleurs, but you now get 24 gears. The bike also has better pedals fitted.

At 13.2kg the 50 carries a bit more weight than the 60 due to the heavier forks. I think that for a little extra on the price, the better gears and fork are well worth it.

Sportster 55. The next model has one change over the 50, and that’s to the brakes. In place of the V-brakes the 55 is fitted with Shimano mechanical discs. Anyone who has ridden through mud will know the value of disc brakes – they stay out of the dirt. In all other aspects the 55 is identical to the 50. The upgrade to discs will cost you only a little more.

Sportster 40. Just as the 55 is designed more for off-road use, the 40 will be more at home on the road. An improved suspension fork, together with narrower 35mm tyres are both better suited to road riding. Both front and rear derailleurs are of higher quality, and a 9-speed cassette now gives you 27 gears. The 40 goes back to V-brakes, with significant weight saving. Nevertheless this is still a hybrid bike, designed for off-road riding as well.

These improvements mean quite an increase in price. However, this is a performance bike and you would go a long way to find this sort of quality for the money. It’s great value.

So any Scott Sportster review will demonstrate that no matter what your budget, or what type of riding turns you on, there’s a bike in the Sportster range to suit.
